The Science & History of Mirror Writing
Mirror writing is formed by writing in the direction opposite to that of a given language's natural way, with the individual letters reversed so that the text looks normal when viewed in a mirror.
Natural Symmetries in the Latin Alphabet:
Certain Latin letters have natural vertical axis symmetry, meaning they look identical when mirrored:
AHIMOTUVWXY
Naturally Paired Mirror Characters
Other lowercase letters are natural mirror pairs of each other:
- b ↔ d (lowercase b reflected horizontally is d)
- p ↔ q (lowercase p reflected horizontally is q)
- ( ↔ ) (parentheses reflect across vertical axis)
- [ ↔ ] (brackets reflect across vertical axis)
Mirror Text FAQ
Common questions about mirror writing and character reflections.
What is mirror text?
Mirror text (or mirror writing) simulates how text appears when viewed in a reflective mirror. It reflects individual character shapes horizontally along a vertical axis and reverses the reading sequence from right to left.
Why are some mirrored letters not exact reflections?
Standard Unicode does not have a dedicated mirror equivalent for every Latin character. Where exact horizontal mirror glyphs do not exist (like the letter "K" or "R"), our engine uses the closest available phonetic symbols (like ʞ or Я from Cyrillic) or maintains the standard glyph.
How do you read mirror text?
You can hold your phone or monitor in front of a real physical mirror, or read it backwards from right to left. Historically, Leonardo da Vinci used mirror writing extensively in his personal notebooks.
